CDS Exam – Combined Defence Services Examination

This exam is conducted by UPSC bi-annually to recruit the aspiring candidates in the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Officers Training Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. For the recruitment into the above mentioned prestigious institutions, the candidates have to go through a written exam (after completing the eligibility prerequisites) and then an SSB interview. The candidates who qualify written exams are called for an SSB Interview i.e. Services Selection Board interview. It is conducted to test the calibre and the leadership qualities of the candidate to be a part of the Indian Armed Forces. This interview lasts for a week during which the candidates undergo several physical, psychological and medical tests. Apart from the SSB interview, the candidates aspiring for recruitment in the Air Force also have to undergo a Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT).

IES Exam – Indian Economic Service Examination

For the recruitment to the administrative civil services, the UPSC conducts the IES Exam. The IES (Indian Economic Services) Officers deal in both the social and the economic sectors. Their role includes economic administration, development policies, programmes, economic advice, etc. This exam is both for the Indian Economic Services and the Indian Statistical Services. The recruitment to these services takes place on the basis of written exams and a personality test. The candidates who qualify through the written exam are entitled for a personality test. This test is conducted to check the overall intelligence, knowledge and personality of the candidate.

NDA Exam – National Defence Academy and Naval Academy (NA) Examination

This exam is conducted by UPSC to recruit the aspiring candidates in the Naval Academy and the National Defence Academy as the Navy and the Army Cadets respectively. These cadets are then absorbed into various sections of the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. The candidate must be a Citizen of India. The candidate should be a 10+2 pass from a recognized board/university with Maths and Physics as the main subjects.

Engineering Services Examination

The UPSC conducts this paper for the recruitment of officers/Engineers in the Indian Engineering Services under the Indian Government. These engineers are hired for various engineering sectors viz. Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics & Communication. The recruitment for the Indian Engineering Services is done in two parts i.e. a written exam and a personality test. The candidates successfully qualifying through the written exam are entitled to a personality test. This test is conducted to test the mental calibre, interests, moral integrity and intellectual qualities of the candidate and those who clear the interview is shortlisted as the assistant engineers in the above-mentioned engineering sectors.

Civil Services Exam

Fondly called as the Indian Civil Services Exam, it is most top level exams held in India for the recruitment in the various departments of the Central Government. It is quite tough as compared to CAT and IIT and is conducted by UPSC annually. This exam is conducted to fill the major civil services post, including IAS Officer, IFS Officer and IPS Officer. The recruitment for the Civil Services is done in three stages i.e. a preliminary exam, a mains exam and an interview. The candidates upon qualifying through these written examinations are called for the interview to test their mental ability and personal suitability. After this, a final merit list is prepared of the passing candidates and the posts are allotted to them keeping in mind their preferences and rank.

Combined Medical Services Examination

Fondly called as the CMS Exam, it is conducted by UPSC for the recruitment of candidates as medical officers in various sectors of the government such as :- Assistant Divisional Medical Officers in the Indian Railways, Junior Scale Posts in Indian Ordnance Factories Health Service, Junior Scale Posts in Central Health Services, Medical Officers in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, General Duty Medical Officers in NDMC. The recruitment for the Medical Services is done in two parts i.e. a written exam and a personality test. The candidates who successfully qualify through the written exam are entitled to a personality test. This test is conducted to check the overall intelligence and knowledge of the candidate.

Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination

The Union Public Service Commission conducts Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Exam every year for the recruitment of candidates as Geologists, Geophysicists and Chemists under the Geological Survey of India and as Hydrogeologists under the Central Ground Water Board. The exam is conducted in two stages i.e. Part I and Part II. Part I comprises of a written exam while Part II comprises of Personality Test/ Interview.

Indian Forest Service Examination

The candidates recruited through this examination are hired as officials, i.e. Divisional Forest Officers, for the conservation, regeneration and protection of the wildlife and forest resources. The candidate must be a Citizen of India. The age should be between 21-30 years. The candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering/ agriculture/ forestry or a bachelor’s degree with Botany/ Chemistry/ Geology/ Mathematics/ Physics/ Statistics/ Zoology/ Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science as one of the main subjects from a recognized institute/ university. The recruitment to the Indian Forest Services is done in two parts i.e. a written exam and an interview. The candidates successfully qualifying through the written exam are called for an interview and those who clear the interview is short listed for the training at Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (Dehradun).
